I like gymnasts. They start training by the age of 3 and by the age of 14 they’ve earned an Olympic gold, silver or bronze medal for their country. So while the rest of us still wrap our minds around the concept of commitment the 2013 USA Select A1 Red team got well on their way in the Women’s International Junior Division silver medaling at the 2013 USAV High Performance Championships. Opera diva Beverly Sills told me, “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” The following players and coaches prove it.

The 2013 USA Select A1 Red team cut no corners on its way to a 7-1 match 22-7 set silver medal record. They had already defeated their gold medal round opponent, USA Junior A1 Red in pool play 3-0 (33-31, 25-20, 25-14). Did Apollo Creed want the rematch in Rocky? In a don’t-blink-you’ll-miss-it match the 2013 USA Junior A1 Red team just edged USA Select A1 Red 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 28-26, 27-25). Vince Lombardi said, “We didn’t lose the game. We just ran out of time.” Who had the better tournament record? USA Junior A1 Red posted a similar 7-1 match 21-8 set record. Gold to silver point ratios; 1.2336 to 1.2283. A gnat’s breath.
